BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Louisiana State Police are investigating a deadly crash in East Baton Rouge Parish. The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office was called to the scene of a crash on Friday, Nov. 15. The coroner's office confirmed that one person was killed in the crash which took place in the 12000 block of Scenic Highway. State police identified the victim as Leandrew Coates, 44, of Zachary. The Baton Rouge Police Department said the crash happened a little before 7 a.m. BRPD units were on the scene providing assistance until the Louisiana State Police arrived to handle the crash. According to LSP, a 2003 Nissan 350Z, which was driven by Coates, was heading south on US 61, just south of Louisiana 964 at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a 2023 Mack dump truck was heading north on US 61 and was making a left turn into a private drive. Man indicted after Baton Rouge nightclub shooting leaves 1 dead "As a result, the Nissan collided with the passenger side of the Mack dump truck," said LSP. State police said Coates was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mack truck was wearing his seatbelt and did not suffer any injuries. A routine toxicology sample was taken for testing. This is an ongoing investigation.
