BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 1-year-old child in September, allegedly left the child in a hot car for four hours after he forgot about the child because he was looking for a gun, according to a probable cause declaration. According to the declaration, Lorenzo Johnson, 39, left his son in the vehicle on Squire Lane to retrieve a gun after subjects were reportedly harassing him while he drove home on Sept. 28. Johnson retrieved the gun to try and kill the subjects harassing him, the report stated. Reports say, Johnson asked his son to get the 1-year-old. The 1 year-old was pronounced dead, according to officials. Officials identified the child as Dream Shorter, 1-year and 8-months. The cause of his death was determined to be hyperthermia due to environmental exposure and the manner was an accident, according to coroner officials. The temperature on Sept. 28 was reported at 96 degrees. Deputies allegedly found a loaded handgun in Johnson's bedroom, according to the report. Johnson is prohibited of possessing a firearm because of a prior conviction. Johnson was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, child cruelty, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person. Johnson is due back in court on Nov. 18.
