Parents react to Olentangy school principal placed on leave after sending election note

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio (WCMH) -- Parents and people within the Olentangy Local School District are reacting to one of its principals being placed on administrative leave after sending a note about the election to her staff.
Monica Asher has been at Olentangy Orange High School since 2022. Asher’s letter said in part, “I can’t write a message that pretends like the election didn’t happen; especially when so many of you are struggling with how to move forward.” That letter went out on Sunday, and the district placed her on leave on Thursday.
Olentangy district parents have expressed their opinions about the situation with Asher. Many of them said that politics and education should be kept separate.
“A little bit shocked that we’re kind of sending our opinion out to others. I think everybody is kind of in a different spot right now and different feelings,” said district parent Allie Forsythe.
Parents agreed that a principal’s political opinions should not be shared in a school setting.
“Politics is politics. Education is different than politics,” said parent Kyungho Kim, who has kids at Olentangy elementary and middle schools.
“There’s kind of a boundary that you have, you know, at that time and I don’t think necessarily sending that out for everybody to see I think that that’s a little much,” Forsythe said.
Emily Nolting said she doesn’t have any kids attending Olentangy schools but said she wouldn’t want her child’s principal to send that letter to colleagues, especially in the current political climate.
“My take on it is just everybody has their own opinions nowadays and it’s just, we should just keep our comments to ourselves maybe,” Nolting said. “Not in an office, not at a school so that’s my opinion.”
In the past, school administrators who have been put on leave sometimes end up resigning or are let go. Olentangy district parents Forsythe and Kim said they don’t necessity agree with Asher’s actions but aren’t sure that she should have to lose her job over the comments.
“Education is our future, kids are our future so we as adults have to support. They’re our future, right, but not important for the politics,” Kim said.
“A conversation definitely needs to be had. I think one thing was very extreme, I don’t know if responding in a very extreme manner is the way to go as well,” Forsythe said.
An Olentangy spokesperson did not confirm that Asher was placed on administrative leave because of the newsletter. The district said it has an investigation open right now and there is no comment or update.
