DC's Union Station granted $82 million for improvements

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- D.C. was awarded two federal grants to improve Washington Union Station, totaling over $82 million for operational and safety needs, as well as the station's overall expansion and modernization.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the grants - which are from the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program - in a news release Friday.
Up to $24 million will go to the Washington Union Station Expansion Project, which aims to improve tracks and platforms, develop new passenger concourses and modernize the station as a whole.

The remaining $58.8 million is dedicated to addressing the immediate safety and operational needs at the station.
“These grants represent a transformative investment in the future of Washington Union Station and our city's transportation infrastructure,” Bowser stated, in part.
The projects are expected to improve the overall passenger experience at Washington Union Station, reduce boarding times and enhance operational efficiency, the release read.
