ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Hundreds of folks in Farmington have been saying the intersection of State Route 332 and 96 is unsafe. They say there have been a slew of accidents including one on Monday which led to a woman's death. "Every time we open the window and see flashing lights, and they're not Christmas lights, they're first responders — it's a concern," said Don Bombace, owner of Bombace Wine and Spirits. His liquor store is right on the intersection of State Route 332 and 96. He's been there for 25 years. Bombace showed News 8 security footage of accidents on the intersection. He's so concerned he started a petition to get decision makers to act — there are already over 800 signatures, and this was before Monday's accident which led to the death of a 61-year-old woman on Rt 332. "The citizens of Farmington have voiced their opinion many times to me, while they shop in the store, and I thought I would spearhead an effort," he said. Bombace says he believes there are two issues here — the first is the speed limit, off of Rt. 332 that's 55 MPH and on Rt. 96 it's 45 MPH. The second, is the left hand turn in front of his business. His solution? Reduce the speed limit in the area, and add a left turn signal onto 96. But, Peter Ingalsbe, Farmington town supervisor says these are state roads. So, the town doesn't have control. But, Bombace says the town can get things going by reaching out to the DOT — though that hasn't been done yet. "Both intersections are state highways but we are concerned. I think the state DOT at minimum should do another study," said Ingalsbe. "People drive too fast and they run the red lights, and so the people trying to make a left-hand turn — it's hard for them." Bombace hopes his efforts will make a difference. In a statement to News 8 the Department of transportation said: "Safety is always the priority for the New York State Department of Transportation and we are always willing to engage with our local partners to discuss concerns and areas for potential enhancements. NYSDOT is in the process of implementing enhancements along State Route 332 and in the vicinity of this intersection, including upgrading signals to increase visibility. As Monday’s crash is the subject of a law enforcement investigation, we cannot comment further at this time."
