The longstanding tradition became official in 1951, when a French law allowed the wine to be released at this specific time. Revered for its light, fruity character and speedy fermentation process, Beaujolais Nouveau is intended to be enjoyed young and is often commemorated with festivals and tastings around the world. Locally, several restaurants and wine bars also host special events for annual holiday, when guests can enjoy the wine alongside French cuisine.
