TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A tribute for the retired nurses who are now residents at Brookdale Sakkonet Bay’s senior living facility in Tiverton.
“We are here today to celebrate you in your nursing journey,” said Darlene Tetreault, from the South Coast Nurse Honor Guard Chapter. “And to offer you comfort and peace in the days ahead.”
The South Coast Nurse Honor Guard Chapter is a nonprofit organization that said its mission is to “recognize and honor the everyday heroes who dedicate their lives to the nursing profession.”
The chapter was recently established in October.
Their first stop was in Tiverton where they honored twelve retired nurses.
“Nursing is a calling, it’s a lifestyle, it’s a way of living,” Tetreault said. “Nurses today honor each of you and your lives as nurses.”
Nurses wore honor guard dresses during the ceremony, the traditional white uniform with a cap and cape.
“It made me feel good that I dedicated myself to nursing for quite a few years,” Brookdale resident Mariecia Maschak said. “I graduated in 1953, so it’s nice to be remembered.”
Two of the nurses in attendance were also recognized for serving the country.
“I was in the Navy nurse club for 23 years,” Audrain Triplett said. “I enjoyed every moment of it.”
