PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — An honor years in the making as Staff Sgt. Raymond Flynn, who was killed in World War II, finally received a proper burial in Pawtucket.
Flynn died during the invasion of Normandy France during a firefight on June 9, 1933.
After his death, he was awarded a Bronze Star for his heroism.
Flynn’s remains were first interred to the 29th Divisional Cemetery in La Cambe, France before they were shipped back to the United States after the war, but he was never given a formal gravestone.
Before he went off to join the Army in 1942, Flynn served as a Providence police officer assigned to the traffic division, where he patrolled Westminster Street and Empire Street.
