NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The Newport man convicted in connection with a deadly stabbing at a house party will spend the next 30 years behind bars, according to R.I. Attorney General Peter Neronha.
Tyrese Poulsen, 22, pleaded no contest Friday to manslaughter for stabbing Maximus Julian to death three years ago.
Neronha said Poulsen and Julian were both involved in an altercation at a house party in an Airbnb off of Thames Street back in May 2021.
Poulsen grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and stabbed Julian in the neck and torso as he attempted to help the hosts clear everyone out of the house, according to prosecutors.
The 22-year-old Little Compton man was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Poulsen and another suspect, 23-year-old Jamaal Reid, turned themselves in days later.
"While justice has been served here, to the extent that is possible, the victim and his family received the worst sentence of all," Neronha said. "[Poulsen] chose to murder Maximus Julian over a petty fistfight, robbing this young man of a full life, for no discernable reason."
Neronha added that Poulsen received the maximum sentence for manslaughter.
"I hope that this outcome demonstrates to those with violent inclinations that this type of flagrant disregard for human life will earn you decades in prison," he said.
Reid, who's been charged with harboring a criminal and disorderly conduct, is scheduled to appear in court next month.
