The giraffe calf was born at the Zoo on November 3rd to second-time mom, Allie, and third-time dad, Joey. The new calf stood within the first hour of birth and measured just under 6 feet tall and 130 pounds. The calf has officially made introductions with the rest of the herd here at the Zoo, and both mom and calf are doing well. The name of the calf will be announced at a later date. “Becoming a mother did not come naturally to Allie with her first calf in 2022, and the Zoo team stepped in to successfully help hand-raise the calf. This second time around, Allie has been nothing but an attentive and doting mother,” said Evan Killeen, Lincoln Children’s Zoo CEO. “We have an exceptional animal care team and an on-site veterinarian, so our team is always prepared for any situation that may arise.” Photo courtesy of Lincoln Children’s Zoo Giraffes are listed as vulnerable on the International Union Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, meaning they face a high risk of extinction in the wild. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan Program (SSP). The program develops a Breeding and Transfer Plan which identifies population goals and recommendations to manage a genetically diverse, demographically varied, and biologically sound population. SSP is incredibly important for conservation work. The plan’s coordinators approved breeding recommendations for Joey and Allie. Visitors can meet the giraffe calf beginning Sunday, November 17th at 10 a.m. at the indoor giraffe barn.
