It was a dreary finish to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky as low level moisture and cloud cover kept the sunshine away and temperatures down. Even with high pressure trying to work in from the west, warmer air aloft created an inversion which trapped the low clouds near the surface. This kept temperatures from moving much at all with afternoon highs hovering in the low to mid-50s much of the day. Unfortunately this is a common set-up as we head into the winter months and it typically takes a bit longer to get rid of the clouds than advertised but that should happen into the weekend. We may start Saturday mostly cloudy across Central and Eastern Kentucky before enough dry air moves in to finally scour away the lingering and stubborn cloud cover. The later we get into the day, the more sunshine we should see. The timing of the clearing will have an impact on afternoon highs but we should get enough sunshine for most locations to top out around the 60 degree mark. If you are heading to Kroger Field for Kentucky and Murray State Saturday afternoon, clouds may hang around for tailgating before the sunshine makes an appearance toward gametime. High pressure will take control of the Ohio Valley so it should be a nice finish to the weekend with sunshine and pleasant temperatures across the board. Afternoon highs are expected to jump back into the mid-60s with the added sun and a bit of a southwest flow so it should be a nice day to enjoy any outdoor activities on Sunday. The quiet weather pattern will roll along into early next week with fair skies and nice temperatures Monday with highs running about 10 degrees or so above average into the upper 60s. The much advertised shift in our weather pattern looks to kick in heading into the mid-week with some initial scattered showers on Tuesday as afternoon highs reach the upper 60s ahead of a cold front. The shower chances will hang around Wednesday as an upper level system rotates over the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. The model data still isn’t synced up with the timing of the colder air arriving but they are getting closer to an agreed solution. Right now it looks like Thursday will be when the colder air arrives with afternoon highs struggling to get into the low to mid-40s as the chilly air rotates in. With some moisture around this could squeeze out a few snowflakes mixed in with rain showers given the cold air but the potential impact is low given the warm ground temperatures, etc. It’s still several days away so we’ll watch the trend into next week.
