RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The Richmond Police Department is alerting residents to a scam involving individuals impersonating local officers. In a Facebook post, police warned that scammers have been using the name and badge number of a real officer to deceive residents. According to the department, the scammers texted residents, claiming they needed to question them about an ongoing investigation. The scammers also set up a voicemail system to appear legitimate if they received callbacks. Richmond Police emphasized that officers will never contact individuals via text message to request personal information. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity. Police also say if you encounter something that appears to be a scam, you can contact the department through the non-emergency dispatch line, 859-624-4776. This warning serves as a reminder for residents to stay vigilant and verify any unusual communications.
