APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - You could have heard a pin drop on Veterans Day as patriotic singer Joseph Scala singing the National Anthem rang through the hallways of the Outagamie Courthouse. The Fox Valley Veterans Council hosted the event which featured guest speaker Aaron Hunnel, a Wisconsin Army National Guard Veteran. He spoke about Veterans making connections to best position themselves for civilian life. He has seen how overall mental health can help with various challenges. He coordinated a bicycle program through the group "Operation Guardian Angel" which provides bicycles to Veterans to stay fit in body and mind. Hometown Heroes: H.O.O.A.H. The Veterans Council President Timothy Cody noted that making connections can be hard for some Veterans. "This is a day where the whole community can connect with them," Cody told Local 5 News. "Make sure they know they're appreciated." It was a packed house for the legendary meat raffle at American Legion Post 38 in Appleton. The money will help them replace the flooring and donate to a non-profit called "Robin's Nest' which helps families fighting cancer. Hometown Heroes: Hmong fighters honored during Brown County festival "This is critical," said Post Commander Jan Hoffman. "Half the people here are Veterans and we signed up two new members. They always wanted to join here, so they came down for the meat raffle, and now they joined." In Green Bay, Veterans proudly stood at attention for the Armed Forces Salute at the Neville Public Museum. The Green Bay East High School Band played the marching songs of each military branch. Members of the American Legion Post 11 and the United Patriotic Society of Green Bay were among the crowd that easily topped 100. "As Veterans, we appreciate what we've gone through together," Richard Balch, the society president shared. "We appreciate the support from the community and the support we provide to ourselves."
