Allen County holds final bash to celebrate 200 years
Nov 15, 2024
ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — This year Allen County turned 200 years old, officials have been celebrating the bicentennial all year long and Saturday is the big Bicentennial Bash.
The Indiana General Assembly passed legislation in late 1823 designating a 660 square-mile area of northeast Indiana to be Indiana's newest county. The legislation would take effect on April 1st, 1824 and on that day Allen County was born.
Since this spring, there has been tons of free events and activities to commemorate the occasion such as dying the Saint Mary's River, changing the colors of the MLK Bridge, a legacy art project adding 15 new sculptures to local communities, the 200 Acts of Kindness initiative and much more.
Officials say the best part of the last 200 years is the diverse people who make up Allen County
"We are the largest geographic county in the entire state, and so when you look at a map, we're almost half rural and half urban. You've got people who have pride in their city or their town, but we've got a lot of folks who are living on homesteads and running a farm as their family business," said Emily Almodovar, Public Information Officer for the Allen County Board of Commissioners.
The Bicentennial Bash is being held Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
With over 700 tickets sold, the event is sold out but if you already purchased tickets, you can expect food, live music, and a night of paying homage to Allen County`s defining moments over the past 200 years.
