NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WANE) — Students of local Lutheran schools head to the basketball court this weekend to duke it out in an annual tournament. But for the students and staff of Central Lutheran School, it's not all about the trophies. The John Weber Memorial Tournament will honor the past principal by joining together local Lutheran schools through basketball. Jonathan Bolt taught while Weber was principal and said he was a supportive, and sometimes goofy, administrator. He said Weber had a way of letting the 300-student body know he cared about each one of them. However, the past principal's sudden death left Central Lutheran School's staff and students in shock. According to his obituary, Weber died of COVID-19. Better Business Bureau hands out Torch Awards at annual conference But the second annual tournament aims to not only memorialize Weber himself but also the Lutheran values he embodied. Bolt says Weber loved his job of being a Lutheran principal, especially when gathering the school together to worship and strengthen friendships. He says the best way to cement Weber's legacy at Central Lutheran School was to continue to build upon the fellowship foundation he once facilitated through sport. "It really kind of gives that opportunity for fellowship and prayer and time together," Bolt said. "One of the things that makes Lutheran schools great is our camaraderie and our shared faith." The tournament begins on Friday at Central Lutheran School located on 900 Green St. The girl's basketball game kicks off the event at 5 p.m. The boy's championship game wraps up the tournament at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
