East Baton Rouge DA proposes property tax for spring ballot to fund hiring efforts

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore is proposing a property tax for the spring 2025 ballot to support his office.
A notice was posted for a public hearing to consider taking action on a new ad valorem tax, Moore confirmed Friday. A meeting for a public hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday in City Hall. An open meeting to adopt the district attorney's budget will be held in December.
Moore confirmed that the amount in the proposed property tax has yet to be determined.
Jon Daily, deputy chief financial officer, said the number of attorneys and support staff is fluctuating due to high turnover rates. Moore said the district attorney's office has around 55 attorneys and around 22,000 pending cases.
Moore said his office is unable to hire more staff or pay competitive wages due to no funding available in the city-parish budget. He said the hiring of new employees is limited due to budget cuts.
He said his office has difficulty retaining staff "given the limited amount of salaries; inability to guarantee raises; stress of the job versus other jobs that the current employees can go to for more pay and less stress."
