ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County launched a survey Friday to gather public input as it develops a plan for managing organic waste.
The county says it's first ever Organics Management Plan will lay out guidelines to help keep organic waste out of landfills and protect the climate.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 12% of greenhouse gas emissions in New York come from things like landfills, waste combustion and wastewater treatment. The survey will help the county develop plans to both prevent and divert organic waste.
The OMP is a part of phase two of Monroe County's Climate Action Plan. The county says the plan will allow it to get more state funding for organics management projects in the future.
There are three separate surveys: One for farmers, one for business owners, and one for residents. Click here to participate.
