Nov 15, 2024
Olivia Bodmer was incredible in the goal for the Rutgers women’s soccer team in the Big Ten Tournament and now she’s looking to bring her magic to the NCAA Tournament.
Bodmer, a redshirt sophomore and former Notre Dame High standout, will be in the goal when the Scarlet Knights (11-4-5) welcome UConn (13-4-4) to Yurcak Field on Saturday at 5 p.m. in an opening round game.
“We are super excited and motivated,’’ said Bodmer, in a Rutgers press conference on Thursday. “We are ready to come out with everything we have and we are really determined.’’
Bodmer will be joined by some other local players looking to help Rutgers advance.
Gia Girman (Nottingham) had a goal and an assist in the Big Ten quarterfinal 2-1 overtime win over Michigan State.
Kylie Daigle (Pennington) has been solid in the midfield, Rachel Quigley (Northern Burlington) is a back-up goalie and freshmen Charlotte Garcia (Hightstown) and Ava Brass (Pennington) round out the locals on the roster.
It was in the semifinal game against Southern California that Bodmer was amazing as the match went to a shootout.
The Scarlet Knights won the shootout by a 3-0 score thanks to three saves by Bodmer, sending them to the Big Ten championship game.
“I don’t feel the pressure in shootouts,’’ said Bodmer. “The pressure is all on the field player to score.’’
She finished with seven saves in the game, but it was the three stops in the shootout making the difference.
UCLA claimed the Big Ten title, beating an exhausted Rutgers, 5-0, in the final, but the attention is now on the Huskies.
Rutgers is 10-2-4 when hosting a tournament match at home and in 18 tourney appearances has 12 first-round wins.
Riley Tiernan, who is suspended for the match, leads Rutgers in points with four goals and 11 assists, Ashley Baran leads in goals with six and Shaela Bradley and Allie Post each have four goals.
“We are just trying to have as much fun as we can in practice,” Bodmer said. “When we are having fun we are a lot more relaxed and confident.”
