LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A construction worker was hospitalized after a dramatic nine-hour rescue Thursday following a 10- to 12-foot fall into a debris-filled void at a demolition site in Louisville. According to the Louisville Fire Department, the worker became trapped beneath gravel and large chunks of concrete during the incident. Firefighters worked tirelessly, removing tons of debris by hand to reach the man. “This was unlike any trench rescue I’ve seen in my 24 years,” Louisville Fire Chief Brian O’Neill said. “Imagine a person at the bottom of a funnel, and everything keeps cascading down. We had to shore up the area to create a safe space and dig the person out.” The rescue, broadcast live on local television, concluded successfully at approximately 8:30 p.m. The worker, who remained conscious and communicative throughout the ordeal, was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition has not been disclosed. The rescue team’s efforts came just days after responding to a deadly explosion at a nearby chemical factory, which killed two people. “This is why we do this job—to help people,” Chief O’Neill said. “It’s not always like the movies, but when you have a success like this, it’s a tremendous feeling.” Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
