(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A suspect ran from officers causing a shelter-in-place near I-25 and North Academy Boulevard in the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 14.
According to CSPD, on Thursday at around 3:30 p.m. officers received a call for service in the 8100 block of North Academy Boulevard near I-25 about a domestic disturbance. A woman reported to officers that a man, whom she had a restraining order against. was on scene.
Police had reason to believe the man, identified as 22-year-old Carlos Martinez was armed so a shelter-in-place was ordered for the area at around 4:30 p.m. Police searched the area and believed Martinez was hiding in a hotel. A number of CSPD officers responded to the area including the Tactical Enforcement Unit, K-9, and Drone units. The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) also responded to assist.
UPDATE: Shelter-in-place lifted for Academy and Voyager
Police determined Martinez had barricaded himself inside the hotel. After giving him multiple verbal orders to come out to officers, chemical irritants were used.
Martinez was taken into custody at 7:15 p.m. and the shelter-in-place was lifted soon after. While taking Martinez to the hospital for evaluation due to chemical irritant exposure, Martinez ran from officers and eluded police for a short time, but he was soon taken back into custody.
CSPD said Martinez is facing multiple charges including escape, menacing, false imprisonment, criminal mischief, obstruction, and multiple counts of violation of a protection order. A firearm was found at the scene and later found to be a BB gun.
