NDrelated issues Burgum is likely to face as Interior Secretary

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — As Secretary of the Interior, Governor Doug Burgum is likely to find himself dealing with a number of issues of particular interest to North Dakota. Among them:
Legacy of Indian Boarding Schools. It's an issue that touches many states, including North Dakota. Canada is also dealing with its Indian School past as well. Among other things, the boarding schools harshly scrubbed Native American heritage from students and were homes to nearly 1,000 deaths among those attending. Right now, Native Americans are pushing for a legislative act to create a Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies. During his tenure as North Dakota governor, Burgum has consistently worked to build a stronger partnership with Native Americans and reservations in the state. Some may see him as a strong advocate for issues and concerns.
Oil Exploration and Drilling Permits on Federal Lands. The Bureau of Land Management, under the Department of the Interior, manages and issues oil and gas leases, which have slowed down to a crawl under the Biden Administration. Energy companies will likely be looking to Doug Burgum to ramp up the permits once more. Burgum has consistently said in the past that he favors doing more to encourage homegrown energy production.
Flaring and Waste Management Rules. The Bureau of Land Management enacted a series of rules governing flaring, waste management, and payment requirements that, essentially, threaten to shut down oil and gas production. North Dakota, along with several other states, filed suit to stop the rules, arguing the Bureau of Land Management is exceeding its authority with the news rules. Burgum could act to modify or rescind the rules. The issue remains in federal court at this time.
