CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - We are two weeks away from Thanksgiving and that means families in need will be looking for food for a traditional turkey dinner. Local food seller donates turkeys to Springfield neighbors Local food banks are seeing an increase in demand for food this time of year and need donations to keep up. As Thanksgiving fast approaches, local food banks are working tirelessly to provide necessary resources for those in need. According to the Executive Director for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts Andrew Moorehouse, the cost of living continues to rise, making it difficult for many families to put food on the table. "People should be able to have a wholesome nutritious meal and be able to sit around a table with loved ones to enjoy it," said Moorehouse. Right now, Moorehouse says the need for food remains consistently high. The food bank is looking to receive cash donations to stock up on a variety of non-perishable items. With every dollar that's donated the food bank can provide the equivalent of three meals. This will go towards helping over 120,000 people seeking out food assistance this Thanksgiving and through the month of November. Rachel's Table is also looking for donations, which serves 65 agencies. "We serve all these other meal sights and they are reporting that shelves can get emptier quicker," said Jodi Falk, Rachel's Table Executive Director. They are accepting any non-perishable item donations like stuffing or canned cranberry sauce to help fill these shelves. Any cash donations will help provide more turkeys for these agencies to distribute to families. So, far Rachel's Table purchased 1,200 turkeys and is seeing more requests come in. "It feels good to know we are doing something and we are a place where people can help us do something so you can join us as a volunteer or join us in financial donation," said Falk.
