Girls Golf: Diamond Bar’s Juliet Oh and Claremont’s Kristina Xu punch tickets to CIF State finals
Nov 15, 2024
CHINO HILLS — With six par 5s, including four over the final six holes, Los Serranos Country Club’s North Course offers opportunities to score.
Diamond Bar’s Juliet Oh, the reigning IE Varsity Girls Golfer of the Year, took full advantage and closed her round in Thursday’s CIF/SCGA regional qualifier with an eagle and birdie for a final score of 5-under-69. However, Oh came up two shots short of Santa Margarita sophomore Emily Song, who finished birdie-birdie to win the qualifier for next week’s CIF State finals at San Gabriel Country Club.
Song also earns an exemption into next year’s SCGA Women’s Amateur Championship with the win, to be played on Torrey Pines Country Club’s South Course which hosted the 2008 and 2019 U.S. Opens along with annually hosting the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open.
Oh and Palomares League champion Kristina Xu were the only two Inland golfers to advance to next week’s state finals.
Starting the morning on No. 16, Oh didn’t have a lot going early…just a lone birdie at the 18th hole. She kickstarted a stretch of three straight birdies with a chip-in at the par-four sixth hole and reached 4-under after 10 holes. A double bogey from the right greenside bunker at No. 9 knocked her back to 2 under, but Oh responded by making a 20-foot eagle putt at No. 13 (her 16th hole). She then got up and down at No. 14 from the front greenside bunker for her final birdie of the day.
“I really had nothing going early on but knew it was going to take something low to get through, so that run of birdies really gave me a spark,” Oh said. “And then to go eagle-birdie on those last two par 5s was huge because I had a little bit of a cushion in terms of any tiebreaker for that final spot.”
Song played four of the course’s six par 5s in her opening seven holes and birdied all of them. She got up and down from the left greenside bunker at No. 13 to reach 6-under par and then drained a 10-foot putt for birdie on No.14 (her final hole) to finish it off. According to the CIF record book, she tied former LPGA Tour player Candie Kung (Fountain Valley, 1998) and Beth Lillie (Troy, 2016) for the lowest score in relation to par in tournament history.
“I’ve always heard that Torrey Pines South is a beautiful venue and I could not be more excited to earn my way into the SCGA Women’s Amateur there by winning today,” Song said. “What’s even better is sharing this with my team who are my biggest supporters.”
Xu, who needed a playoff to get through CIF Southern Section Central regional qualifying in Victorville two weeks ago, made three birdies against just one lone bogey for a 2-under-par round of 72 and advanced.
Southwestern League champion Fay Jia (Vista Murrieta), Baseline League champion Emily Zhang (Rancho Cucamonga), and Citrus Belt League champion Maleah Clark (Beaumont) all finished with 1-over-par rounds of 75 and failed to advance. Clark started double-bogey and bogey but responded with three straight birdies at Nos. 16-18 to reach 1 under. However, back-to-back bogeys finished her chances of advancing.

Murrieta Valley’s Maddie Sammon, who thought she was eliminated in a playoff loss at last week’s CIF Southern Section’s individual championships, actually earned a spot in the field and made a double bogey, three bogeys, and a lone birdie in a round of 78 (+4).
Meanwhile, Ayala’s Madison Soong and Vista Murrieta’s Breanna Noble also concluded their seasons with rounds of 79.
Santa Margarita also won the team championship, shooting a combined score of 352 (-8) to finish10 shots ahead of fellow Trinity League member Orange Lutheran. Rounding out the trio of qualifying teams was San Diego Section champion Torrey Pines.
