Drake and Legates led Cal State San Bernardino’s block party Thursday evening at Coussoulis Arena, as the Coyotes registered 15 stuffs to take down No. 3 nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona 25-27, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball match. Cal State San Bernardino snapped Cal Poly Pomona’s 18-match win streak and spoiled its rival’s first attempt to clinch the CCAA title outright. Drake, who graduated from Summit High in Fontana, ended her night with nine block assists. Legates had a solo block and five block assists. Five of the blocks by the Coyotes (15-9 overall, 11-6 in CCAA) during Thursday’s match were of the combination variety by Drake and Savannah Hoffman. When these teams squared off in Pomona back on Sept. 20, Cal State San Bernardino had only five blocks and were beaten in four sets by the Broncos. “We’re an undersized team, and our sophomore middles did not see much playing time last season,” Cal State San Bernardino coach Kim Cherniss said of Drake (5-foot-10) and Legates (5-9). “We’ve improved so much in certain areas this season, and blocking definitely is one of them.” The opening game featured a few early lead changes and the teams were knotted at 10. Abbey Clarke’s third ace of the frame gave the Coyotes the lead at 11-10. Drake. Hoffman and Legates then combined for three blocks to help Cal State San Bernardino extend its advantage to 17-13. Cal Poly Pomona (22-2, 16-1) came up with a quick response. The Broncos went on a 6-0 run to grab the lead, with a kill by Samantha Campion leveling the score at 18 and an ace by Campion putting Cal Poly Pomona in front. Cal State San Bernardino fought off three set points, the third on a rotation violation by the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona regrouped, however, and took the opening set following back-to-back kills by Campion. Cal State San Bernardino raced to a 4-0 lead and never trailed in the second set, although Cal Poly Pomona did tie the score at 10 and 12. Senior outside hitter Ashley Robinson led the attack for the Coyotes during the second set, recording kills on all seven of her attempts. “We just took that opening set as a learning experience,” said Robinson, who finished with a match-high 21 kills while adding 14 digs and three block assists of her own. “Our morale, our fight and our determination to win this match tonight helped us come back after losing a close first set.” Robinson, Hoffman and Pederson combined for 13 kills in the third set and helped the Coyotes take an 20-15 lead. Cal Poly Pomona won the next five points to tie the score, forcing Cherniss to use both of her timeouts in the process. Cal State San Bernardino quickly countered with a 5-1 run to close out the set. Legates and Robinson combined for a pair of blocks in the decisive run, and an Clarke’s fourth ace brought the set to an end. Cal Poly Pomona grabbed a 4-1 lead in the fourth after two aces by Jenna O’Shea. Sarah Ybarra tallied seven of her team-high 19 kills in that frame to keep the pressure on the Coyotes. Cherniss used her second timeout after Cal Poly Pomona won three straight points to extend its lead to 14-10. “A three-point run is a big deal in a match like this,” Cherniss said. “I’m not a coach who is going to save timeouts in case its 22 all.” The timeout halted the run and soon the score was tied at 14 after a kill by Jordan Cherniss and three straight hitting errors by the Broncos. Cal State San Bernardino took the lead for good when Hoffman slammed down on overpassed ball for a kill. Legates added a pair of kills to get the Coyotes to match point, and Cal Poly Pomona’s 31st attacking error ending the match and the Broncos’ impressive winning streak. “Credit to San Bernardino. They played very well tonight,” Cal Poly Pomona coach Traci Dahl said. “We needed to find answers sooner than we did. “I think this will motivate us moving forward. We have a lot of players who are very competitive and are not happy about what happened here tonight.” The Broncos will have another chance to lock up the conference title outright when they play at San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon.
