"Here is an example of a compostable paper bowl and it smooth, but it does not have a coating," Kuhio Food Hall owner Michael Palmer explained holding up a brown paper bowl. "A year ago," he added, "Something like this, if you had soup or something, you'd see something that was kind of shiny in it." That shiny coating was a barrier for grease, moisture, and hot liquids, but it contained forever chemicals called PFAS. "Why (PFAS) isn't good is because it's linked to serious health problems," Hawaii Restaurant Association Executive Director Sheryl Matsuoka explained. "So it causes health issues because it builds up in your body." Hauula’s beloved Tamura’s Market to close after 20 Years So the State adopted a law prohibiting the manufacture, sale and distribution of paper food packing made with PFAS and it goes into affect December 31, 2024. "Will we really see any change in the cost of a plate lunch of any to-go items when this goes into effect in January?" KHON asked. "I think it depends on the restaurant or the vendor how they're going to decide to pass that on to consumers," Palmer responded. "I think most of the cost has already been passed on from the earlier bans. With the PFAS ban, I don't think you're gonna see as much of an impact." The new law prohibiting forever chemicals in paper food packages does not include any plastic containers like that are considered reusable. Plastic food containers fall under a different county law. And while there are exemptions for plastic food containers, the Hawaii Department of Health Food and Drug Branch said there are no exceptions to for the ban on PFAS in paper food packaging products. "We don't like things that cost more, but we do care about health and public safety and following the law, the law of the land and health department guidelines," Palmer said. "So we want to be compliant with all of that." Since the FDA has already been working with manufacturers, Palmer said it's been easy finding products made without PFAS.
