Free swim lessons offered to local kids

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Local kids are being treated to free swim lessons thanks to a new partnership between the YMCA of Greater Rochester and MVP Health Care.
"The Earth is about 70% water so we should be able to operate in it," said George Warren, the vice president of Urban Services for the YMCA of Greater Rochester. "Nobody should be afraid of a nice pool or beach day."
Per semester, 50 kids are invited to take part in these ten-week sessions. Overall, Warren said they'll serve 100 kids.
"We see swimming as a life skill, a necessary skill for all children, and all the adults for that matter," Warren said.
A bonus: It's all free.
The goal, according to Warren, is to improve access to these kinds of services.
"With the community, access to pools dwindles. You see more spray parks pop up; fewer pools are there. So, it's making it a little more challenging to get kids in pools, in water and learning how to swim."
MVP Health Care officials said it was a no-brainer to join this endeavor.

"We know that swimming and water safety is so important. Especially in this region, and a lot of kids don't have access to swim lessons, swim programs. So, it was something we were passionate about supporting with the Y," said Stacey Spadoni, the community relationship manager at MVP.
The lessons are being held at the Maplewood Family YMCA on Driving Park Avenue in Rochester. They're available to kids ages 6-18. A second session will begin in January. Registration for that will open Dec. 16. You can register here.
