FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Ahead of Thanksgiving, two Fresno nonprofits are joining forces to feed the community. The Central California Food Bank and the Fresno Mission will host the fourth annual One Table Fresno event on Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be at the City Center on 2025 E. Dakota Ave. in Fresno. They will give away hot steak dinners, winter coats and turkeys to take home. However; they still need coat donations before the event. “We don’t mess around. We’re providing the very best for our community,” Central California Food Bank Co-CEO Kym Dildine said. They expect around 4,500 people to attend, including Lieutenant Gov. Eleni Kounalakis. They clarify the event is not only for those in need; it is for everyone. “It's not an event that has, like, the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots.’ There's not this huge line between the people who, you know, they need food and the people who are there just to volunteer to give the food,” Fresno Mission CEO Matt Dildine said. He says it is about bringing the community together for lunch, no matter what they have in their pantries or their wallets. However, Kym Dildine says many do experience financial stress during the holiday season. “All the kids in California have access to free or reduced meals at school, but when they're out of school for long breaks like Thanksgiving break or Christmas break, families really have a hard time meeting all of their needs,” Dildine said. She says one in four families struggle with food insecurity. As the food bank works to address what she calls “an epidemic,” she calls on community support. She says tangible food donations are best suited for small food pantries, but financial donations are most effective for the Central California Food Bank. “For every $1 that we receive, we can provide up to four meals. We have incredible relationships with manufacturers, retailers and farmers. And so we're able to get food in at a really low cost,” Dildine said. She says the donations will both support their everyday efforts and their special holiday events. For those who cannot donate, she says they always need more volunteers.
