(KRON) -- Disgraced San Jose city councilmember Omar Torres was denied bail in a San Jose courtroom on Thursday. Torres resigned from his office last Tuesday and was arrested after new allegations came forward about him allegedly sexually assaulting a minor.
Torres was in attendance for Thursday's court proceedings but stood out of sight in a hallway with only his attorney present in the courtroom.

The judge at Thursday's proceedings said Torres remains a danger to minors.
According to a police report, Torres raped the victim repeatedly between 1990 and 1999. In an allegedly recorded conversation between Torres, the victim, and another person, Torres admitted to sexually assaulting the victim 20 to 25 times.
Although that incident was 25 years ago, Santa Clara County Assistant District Attorney Brian Welch cited more recent evidence to request Torres be held without bail.
"Looked at the evidence that we cited of text messages between Mr. Torres and the individual that he said was extorting him, but these were text messages from two years ago and from that the court was able to conclude that there was a danger to minors," said Welch.
Torres' attorney said he was not surprised by the court's decision Thursday.
"Certainly understand the court's ruling," said defense attorney, Nelson McElmurry. "Disappointed of course. I do think Mr. Torres has been as an adult, a model citizen and has given back a tremendous amount to this community and is certainly well known."
Separately, Torres is the subject of another ongoing investigation into allegations that he had abused a 17-year-old. Torres' case initially came to light when he told police he was the victim of extortion.
Torres is being accused of lewd acts with a child, oral copulation of a minor, and sodomy of a child. He is facing three felony counts of child molestation and faces a maximum of 24 years in prison.
Torres was elected to represent District 2 in 2022 and was the first openly gay Latino to sit on a city council in Santa Clara County. His resignation takes effect on Nov. 27.
