PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Good news has come for the more than seven million Americans living with the disease this Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Dr. Ted Huey, the director of the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital, said there are two new drugs on the market that are “disease modifying” for those afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Huey said they not only treat symptoms, but make the disease progress a little slower. The doctor added that testing has also become both less invasive and expensive, as it is largely covered by insurance, including Medicaid. However, Huey added that making sure everyone has access to the treatment remains a challenge. The program is also looking for volunteers for research. Volunteers do not have to be diagnosed with the disease. Those interested can contact 401-455-6402 or [email protected]. In particular, people with a family history of Alzheimer’s or a family member currently diagnosed are encouraged to get involved. Categories: News, Providence, Rhode Island
