Neighbors concerned about southside Kansas City condo proposal

Those are just a few of the concerns neighbors have about a southside Kansas City condo proposal. Neighbors along Holmes Road believe it’s already a done deal, and at least one complained she’s considering moving out.

Peggy Calhoun has lived here for 15 years. She’s attended a series of public meetings held by developers who want to build 50 condo buildings and 174 living units here. Over the past year, Iron Door, the project developer, has bought 20 houses in the neighborhood, including several boarded-up vacant homes along Holmes Road.
Calhoun is one of several who won’t sell, but she’s disappointed that Kansas City councilmembers approved a rezoning request that could clear the way. Calhoun and others think it’s too much development for a tight space.
“It’s just a lot of cars, and maybe this area could just reduce it a little bit and not have quite that many units,” Calhoun said.
FOX4 reached out to Iron Door twice on Thursday, but nobody replied. Some homeowners are upset these new 2,100 square foot units are estimated to cost $400,000 apiece.
“With the new development, there’s going to be more traffic, and more people and more traffic in and out. I have two young children who I’m concerned about. Just more people being around,” Greer Dimarco, another neighbor, said, while tending to her two children.

Iron Door's proposal also includes the recommendation to widen that section of Holmes Road. The city council's planning and development committee is due to meet again on November 19th. An online agenda doesn't include this proposed development.
Jonathan Duncan, Kansas City council sixth district representative, told FOX4 he believes the developer has appropriately addressed concerns from the public. Duncan applauds this development, saying he realized that area of Kansas City needs more housing options.
