Post election poll shows political talk during Thanksgiving dinner could lead to arguments
Nov 14, 2024
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — The online research platform Prolific has just released new findings from a post election poll showing talking about politics this holiday season may not be the best idea for family gatherings.
According to the Americans surveyed, political tensions remain high even a week after the presidential election. While some families say they are looking forward to all of the tradition Thanksgiving fixings and seeing their loved ones, others appear to be a bit apprehensive. The research indicates that 22% percent of Americans report that tensions have gone up among families since the 2024 election between Vice President Kamala Harris, and now President – Elect Donald Trump. A number that goes up when it came to voters between the ages of 18-24 who reported a 36% percent.
According to the same study, one quarter of young voters believe that bringing up politics may result in arguments during that turkey dinner. Even more startling are the findings showing as many as 20% percent of the people interviewed say they plan on avoiding awkward or uncomfortable conversations by steering clear of family get togethers completely.
Below is a look at some more of the data reported in the study done by Prolific.
Rising Family Tensions: 22% of Americans report increased polarization within their families following the 2024 election, and among younger voters (ages 18-24), that figure jumps to 36%.
Thanksgiving Concerns: One-quarter of young Americans worry that political discussions could lead to arguments at Thanksgiving.
Skipping Family Gatherings: 20% of respondents plan to skip traditional gatherings, opting instead to spend Thanksgiving alone, avoid family interactions, or even leave the country to sidestep uncomfortable conversations.
Dissatisfaction with Leadership: 62% of Americans express disapproval of the current government’s record, while over 58% hold an unfavorable opinion of Donald Trump.
Strong Conviction Among Voters: Despite the divisions, 96% of Americans feel confident in their voting decisions with no regrets.
