CSP rolls to repeat title in Class D

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — You can't spell championship without CSP.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama, the top-ranked Class D football team in the state, retained its sectional title with a 33-8 romp over Franklinville/Ellicottville on Thursday night at Highmark Stadium.
Senior quarterback Tate Catanese rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns, with scoring passes to Carter Brink and Bryce Hinsdale, and Travis Owens capped the Wolfpack's 33-point surge after a scoreless first quarter before Billy Slavinski broke the shutout with an 8-yard TD run in the final minutes for Franklinville/Ellicottville (7-4).
"We came out in the first quarter and to be honest, it was me making mistakes. A few bad throws, a few miscues," Catanese said. "But I think the team as a whole rallied around me, and we turned it around for the second, third and fourth quarters. It came down to being tougher."
Hinsdale and Dalton Richter had interceptions for a CSP defense that held F/E to 191 yards. In two matchups this season, the Titans totaled 13 points against the Wolfpack, 20 fewer than their average against every other opponent.
"We hang our hat on playing great defense and being a physical football team," CSP coach Ty Harper said.
CSP (8-2), Section VI champions in four of the past seven seasons and state semifinalists a year ago, advanced to the Far West Regional playoffs next Friday night against the Section V champion at SUNY Brockport.
"It feels good coming out here, playing in this awesome atmosphere, and all these fans come here to watch us," Catanese said. "But it feels even better knowing we can continue to play and hopefully win more games."
