MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (DC News Now) -- Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and with it comes the annual ritual of watching the Macy's Day Parade in New York City. This year, a talented musician from our area has been invited to perform. Rena Mullenax plays the flute and piccolo with the Martinsburg High School Bulldog Band and is packing her bags for the thrill of marching in midtown Manhattan on the Big Day. "There's just such an adrenaline rush performing for people on such a massive scale, and it's absolutely an honor," said Rena. Rena is one of just four musicians in the entire state who was invited to march in the Big Apple. "Hopefully I'll pick up good leadership knowledge and playing knowledge that I can put towards our band," said Rena. ‘Magnet fishers’ pull bikes, scooters from Anacostia River in Navy Yard That knowledge, along with the hometown pride that Rena has generated from this experience, resonates with Casie Adams, director of the Bulldog Marching Band. "For her to have this opportunity to represent the Bulldog Band program and Martinsburg High and Berkeley County and the State of West Virginia is phenomenal," Adams said. "I mean, it's absolutely fantastic and I think just the people in Martinsburg, this town pride, they're like, 'hey, one of us is in that parade, out on those streets,' and that's amazing," Rena said. She also added, "My dad loves parades, so I know he'll be screaming his head off." The parade isn't the only thing that Rena is looking forward to. "We get to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, which I am very excited about," she said.
