HEAP now accepting applications

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)---With winter just around the corner, the Home Energy Assistance Program, known as HEAP, helps New Yorkers pay their energy bills.
"Heat is a basic human need, and no one should have to put their health and safety at risk because they can’t afford their energy bills," said U.S. Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand.
To help those who are struggling, Gillibrand announced $360 million dollars in federal funding for New York.
Governor Kathy Hochul encouraged New Yorkers in need to apply, now that the program is open.
"It is a first come, first serve program. Qualifying households can receive up to $1,000 in benefits to help pay for their heating bills this winter," said Hochul.
Eligibility is based on income, household size, the presence of a household member who is under the age of six, age sixty or older, or are permanently disabled, as well as the primary heating source.
"Whether your home is heated by natural gas, oil, electric, any fuel, HEAP can help offset the costs," explained Hochul. "And the good news is, the program doesn’t just pay for utility bills, it can be used to offset the cost of fixing or even completely replacing a busted heating unit which can be debilitating for a family."
According to the governor, qualified homeowners can receive up to $4,000 to repair an existing unit and $8,000 for a replacement.
