North Bay sheriff accuses San Leandro woman of largescale fraud scam

(KRON) -- A San Leandro woman was arrested Wednesday morning for her alleged involvement in multiple financial scams throughout the Bay Area, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation in September after receiving a report of a scam involving a fake virus supposedly located on the elderly victim’s computer. The victim was told to contact “what they believe to be a legitimate source for assistance,” authorities said, and was then directed to withdraw large sums of cash from their bank accounts for couriers to pick up at the victim’s home.

Investigators were able to identify Chen as being the suspect involved in the scam, the sheriff’s office said. On Nov. 13, two search warrants were executed at two residences in San Leandro. Authorities said evidence was collected and a “large volume” of U.S. currency was recovered during the searches. The Northern California Computer Crimes Task Force assisted in the investigation's digital forensics.

The sheriff’s office alleged that Chen is involved in multiple financial scams that have occurred in the Bay Area over the last several months. Chen was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail for grand theft and embezzlement of an elder adult. Bail was set at $2.5 million.
“This type of scheme has become increasingly common in recent years throughout the Bay Area,” the sheriff’s office said. Last month, a 93-year-old victim of an email scam in Napa lost $20,000 after a courier picked up the cash. The suspect in that case allegedly told police he worked all over the Bay Area as a courier for scammers to collect money from elderly people.
