Man charged, accused of rape is a WSU student, graduate assistant

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Wichita State University confirms that a man who was arrested this week and accused of rape is a student and a graduate assistant.
According to the WSU Police Department's crime log, officers took a report on Nov. 8 of a sexual assault that happened on Nov. 4 in a campus building.

On Nov. 11, WSU police officers arrested Mohamed Barkat Mia. He was officially charged with rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and attempted aggravated criminal sodomy on Nov. 14.
The school says the University Police Department investigates reports of sexual assault and are also reviewed by the university’s Office of Civil Rights, Title IX and ADA Compliance.

"We take these allegations seriously and have processes and procedures to address potential misconduct by students / staff, which includes, but is not limited to, policies and procedures to investigate allegations of sexual assault," said a spokesperson for WSU. "We are deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our campus community and provides a multitude of resources to anyone who has experienced sexual assault or any form of violence. Both internal and external resources can be found through a search on our website."
Mia's bond is set at $200,000.
