I470 bridge in Topeka to open ahead of schedule
Nov 14, 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced that work on a flyover bridge in Topeka will be finished ahead of schedule.
KDOT said on Nov. 14 in a press release the I-470 flyover bridge in west Topeka will be opening on Friday, Nov. 15. The project is being finished nearly a month sooner than expected. The former bridge was 65-years-old and required extensive maintenance work. KDOT said the former bridge was "functionally and structurally obsolete."
KDOT says the newly completed steel girder bridge will take less effort to maintain.

"The design, letting and construction on the I-470 bridge was accelerated from 2025 to 2024 so that the new structure would be complete before the I-70 Polk-Quincy Viaduct project begins early next year," KDOT said in a press release.
