County Commission gives Topeka events center $275,000
Nov 14, 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Oak View Group, the company that operates the Stormont Vail Events Center, is being given $275,000 from the county's contingency fund after speaking with Shawnee County Commissioners on Thursday.
According to an Oak View Group spokesperson, the Stormont Vail Events Center and its surrounding buildings had a disappointing financial year and requested $552,403 to cover its negative revenue in 2024.
The Oak View Group said they spent more money than they collected for some events and said some other events didn't happen. An example provided was for the Topeka Tropics and their multiple home games that were lost after the National Arena League's failed attempts to find new ownership.
The group asked the county to step in and provide financial support. Commissioners agreed to pay about half with the funds coming out of the county's contingency fund. The money in the contingency fund is used for urgent needs throughout the year. The fund currently has about $629,000.

"We have made a number of adjustments for the 2025 operating budget year," Stormont Vail Events Center spokesman Kellen Seitz said. "We have already contracted a few pieces of new business for 2025 that we feel will help that revenue process in the coming years to avoid this situation."
Commissioner Aaron Mays motioned to approve the amended request with all in favor.
