HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (WSAV) – Jasper County is celebrating a multi-million dollar economic opportunity that could lead to further expansion. The South Atlantic Logistics Terminal, or SALT, will hold up to 6 million square feet of warehouse and industrial space. "It's really exciting to see what holds for the future here,” said Jasper County Council Chairman Martin Sauls. The 880-acre, $200 million project in Hardeeville is expected to generate 550 or more jobs coming from the 400,000 skilled potential employees within a 60-mile radius. “So that’s going to have a huge impact here locally because people who live here will now be able to work here,” Sauls added. State Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort) said it’s thousands of acres of undeveloped land in a prime spot, close to the CSX rail line and Interstate 95, plus the Savannah port and airport. "All the fundamentals have always been there, but it's never realized its potential. Now, that's changed," Davis said. 3 more monkeys recovered in Yemassee The site has been five years in the making, receiving more than $8 million in state infrastructure grant funding. Local leaders say the site will also bring more infrastructure that could help support a proposed Jasper port — a step forward for a project that has been rumored for almost a decade. “You know, companies that are importing sporting goods globally come in through the Savannah port, as well as the South Carolina port. They need manufacturing, distribution, warehousing centers here to support that because logistics are a very important part of that chain,” Sauls said. Davis agreed: "The more commercial activity you have in Jasper County, the more facilities like this you have built, the more that the integration of South Carolina into that economic orbit, the easier a Jasper port becomes.”
