TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) —City of Tybee officials warned residents against scammers claiming to be the city on Thursday.
Officials said that residents should always check with the city if residents have questions about the validity of an invoice.
They also gave some tips on how to identify fake invoices:
You should always check to ensure an invoice came from a legitimate official city email address or was mailed from the city's office. If the email or address is questionable, contact the city to validate it.
Scam invoices may contain spelling errors, incorrect logos or odd formatting.
When in doubt, contact the city directly.
Actual city invoices will never ask for personal information like Social Security numbers, passwords or bank details.
"If something looks off, it probably is," officials said.
