Warmer weather continues into Friday ahead of our next storm system. Rain and and mountain snow will return across parts of the state Sunday and Monday. A warming trend is starting Thursday with high temperatures anywhere from a couple degrees to 15° warmer than Wednesday. Temperatures in the 60s are as far north as Durango and Clayton today, with 70s in southern New Mexico. On Friday, windier weather will return to western New Mexico where gusts up to 45 mph will be possible. This will bring an elevated fire danger west of I-25. Friday will also be our warmest day this week, with highs 5° to 10° warmer than today. A storm starts moving into New Mexico this weekend. It will continue to bring in breezy winds Saturday afternoon, along with cooler temperatures. The biggest drop in temperatures will be Sunday as the storm brings rain and snow above 9,000' through Monday morning. The highest chances for precipitation will be in southern and eastern New Mexico, with areas up to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and Clayton also seeing rain and mountain snow. Over 1" of rain will be possible in southeast and eastern New Mexico, with a dusting to several inches of snow in the mountains. Drier weather briefly returns Monday afternoon, but temperatures will stay cool. Tuesday is where our forecast begins to diverge. One forecast model has another storm clipping far northeast New Mexico, bringing just some spotty rain and snow to northeastern parts of the state through Wednesday. While another forecast model brings a much stronger storm straight across the state, bringing widespread rain and snowfall, even down into valleys and lower elevations. Regardless of the path of the low pressure system, it will definitely be much cooler all across the state by the middle of next week.
