RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Welcome to the first episode of 8News Arts & Culture, where we dive into the vibrant world of creativity and culture in Central Virginia, as well as the people shaping it. This week's episode, hosted by Digital Producer Kendal McAuley and Video Editor Catrice Roots, highlights an Art Exhibit opening at the historic Watkins Cottrell building in Shockoe Bottom. Roots spoke with Syrian-American artist, Baha Omary Kikhia, who is based in Northern Virginia. She is most known for her colorful and vibrant ceramics, oil paintings and illustrations. "Now I'm giving everyone -- especially women -- messages and some advice from my experience because the results -- it was for me -- [were] very good, very successful," Kikhia said. Kikhia frequently creates distinctive artwork featuring vibrant, bold colors and flowing, curved lines, to resonate with and empower women. "There is one condition -- the translation should be correct, real and honest," Kikhia said. "Then you translate your feelings, either 'love' or 'I don't like.' You have to do it in life, so life will be really easier and better." Although Kikhia is based in the Northern Virginia area, her work is well-established in Central Virginia as well.
