Closing arguments in double homicide trial; jury still deliberating

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The fate of a man accused in a brutal Fall River double murder is in the hands of a Bristol County jury.
On May 18, 2021, two people were killed at Griffin Park in Fall River in the middle of the day.
Jeremy Holmes, who investigators said was responsible for the shooting deaths of 29-year-old Jovaughn Antonio Mills and 14-year-old Miguel Sanjurjo, was charged with two counts of murder.
There was also a third shooting victim who did recover.
Thursday was a full day of closing arguments and deliberations for the jury in Fall River superior court.
Holmes’ defense attorney said his actions on that day were out of protection of his friends and out of fear of rival gang violence.
“As soon as he saw that person in black reach for that gun, it was kill or be killed he made a difficult decision, albeit necessary decision,” Frank Camera said.
While the commonwealth’s prosecutor said Holmes’ actions were pre-meditated acts of violence.
“The clear evidence before you is that the defendant is the first aggressor,” Patrick Driscoll said. “There’s not the law of Griffin Park, and the law of the commonwealth, there’s not the laws of gangs and gang culture; there’s only the law.”
The jury deliberated for much of the afternoon and still has not reached a verdict.
Deliberations will resume Friday.
