PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island officials announced additional grant funding Thursday to support infrastructure improvements for affordable housing projects statewide.
The Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank and Department of Housing awarded $2.8 million to five communities as part of efforts to tackle the ongoing housing crisis.
"Developing housing projects often requires upgrades to municipal infrastructure, including site preparation, stormwater management, sidewalks, and wastewater utilities," William Fazioli, Executive Director of R.I. Infrastructure Bank, said.

The largest award, $1.2 million, went to Pawtucket to fund green infrastructure construction for a transit-oriented development called the "RISE Pawtucket" apartments. Estimated at more than $57 million, the project will feature 177 units, with groundbreaking expected in early 2025.
In West Warwick, nearly $209,000 will support infrastructure upgrades for the Lofts at Riverpoint, a historic mill renovation project featuring 10 housing units.
East Providence received $480,000 to support the Center City Apartments, which will transform three blighted acres into 144 apartment units with community and amenity spaces.
A $240,000 grant will help redevelop 246 Prairie Ave. in Upper South Providence into a mixed-use affordable housing project.
Around $727,000 was awarded for improvements to the Woodland Manor Pump Station in Coventry, supporting the development of a 142-unit project.
"Housing is the key to a stronger economy, and this funding helps spur housing development projects that will create homes for Rhode Island families who need them," Gov. Dan McKee said.
