PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) — On Wednesday, local housing organizations, community partners, and several state officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a new, age-restricted housing development in Portsmouth. The Ade Bethune House, located on Bristol Ferry Road, will feature 54 affordable housing units and share amenities with the town's new Senior Center. Unlike typical elderly housing, which is usually designated for people ages 62 and older, this development will be open to residents ages 55 and up. Serving as the new Portsmouth Senior Center, the Ade Bethune House will provide a hub for programs, resources and social activities for town residents over 60. The Church Community Housing Corporation (CCHC) entered into a 99-year ground lease with the town for the site, according to RI Housing. "The Ade Bethune House will bring 54 units of affordable, age-restricted housing to Portsmouth and help meet critical housing needs for our aging population," Gov. Dan McKee posted on X.
