NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) - Soon, all 17 elementary schools in the Norman Public Schools District will have STEAM labs.
“Without further ado, we're excited to announce a gift of $500,000 to equip the new foundation labs,” said Chris Graves, the President of the Board of Directors for the Norman Public Schools Foundation.

The “Foundation Labs” will promote hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning.
"As educators, we also understand the importance of bringing lessons to life and we know students learn more when they can apply their passions and participate in hands-on learning activities,” said NPS Superintendent Nick Migliorino.

Construction of the labs is possible thanks to a recent school bond issue. The Norman Public School Foundation’s donation covers the curriculum, equipment and tools for the spaces.
NPSF said this is the biggest single investment in the foundation’s history.
On Thursday, KFOR got a look at examples of projects the students will tackle, like the “Mars Rover Kit.”

"They take those components and they connect it to a computer program where they have to determine which pieces are the input, which pieces are the output, how to actually make the car go forward because it's on a default mode,” said Kristi Gray, the director of gifted and AP programs.
Gray told KFOR the cars can do things like go through mazes or play soccer.
"Our kids are going to come out of elementary in such a different place and what they're going to be able to do in secondary is going to be tremendous in their ability to go into the workforce,” said Gray.
