VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - If you've been in the region long enough, you'll remember those "no cursing" signs down at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. They were taken down in May 2019, but now a handful of folks have the chance to own one. Virginia Beach’s infamous ‘no cursing’ signs being donated to police charity You can go to the Virginia Beach Police Foundation (VBPF) online auction site now to bid on a "No Cursing" sign. These are the actual signs that were removed from display and donated to the VBPF earlier this year, after city council approval. Click here to place a bid The signs first went up in the 1990s as part of an effort to encourage a family-friendly atmosphere in the resort city. Bidding went live at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 and ends Monday, Nov. 18. There are currently six of the metal signs up for auction. When WAVY checked the site Thursday afternoon, there had been dozens of bids, with the highest bid at $410 for one of the signs with the series of symbols on it, like in this image. All of the signs are listed with a retail cost of "priceless." The police foundation says to "bid high and bid often." The non-profit, which is a separate entity from the police department, funds several initiatives, including helping families of injured and sick officers. A message on the bidding site states: Hello everyone!!!  Thank you for viewing our auction.  The Virginia Beach Police Foundation acquired these "No Cursing" signs from VB City Council and will use the funds raised to support our mission.  Mainly, we provide financial assistance for those endeavors which serve to improve the effectiveness, public understanding and morale of the members of the Department and their families. Virginia Beach Police Foundation 100% of the proceeds from this auction will benefit the VBPF. Winners will be required to pick up the signs in-person. Winning bids must be paid within 48 hours of auction ending.
