City, county mayors announce joint Neighborhood Safety effort
Nov 14, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mayors of Memphis and Shelby County announced a new office Thursday in an effort to combat crime that's backed by the White House.
The Joint Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement will look into data for crime hot spots, Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris said.
“The kids in our city could care less about our bureaucracy," Young said. "They don't care whether it's the city the county the feds the state. They just want help."
Memphis ended 2023 with a record 397 homicides, surpassing the record set two years earlier.

Leaders say the goal is to speak with one voice to get the resources that the city needs to reduce that crime — particularly more federal funding.
That's where Greg Jackson comes in. He is Deputy Director of White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
"This is a historic because you are blessed to have leaders that have the vision to take on a health crisis and turn it around and invest in resources and strategies to address that crisis," Jackson said.
Jackson says the Biden-Harris administration has invested more than $30 billion into public safety nationwide.
Here in Memphis, through this initiative, more federal dollars will be available to help local organizations secure funding and grants.
Valerie Matthews, Director of the Joint Office of Neighborhood Safety & Engagement for Shelby County, will lead the new effort.
"We are focused on four key areas: inform, integrate, invest and innovate," Matthews said.

Keeping in mind that there are 66 days left for the Biden-Harris administration, Jackson says he can't speak to what the next administration will do.
Both mayors say they are prepared to make sure the office is sustainable.
