Clouds linger across the area as we close out the week
Nov 14, 2024
We saw a good soaking rain during the early hours of Thursday across Central and Eastern Kentucky as an area of low pressure and a frontal system moved into the Ohio Valley. Most locations picked up a solid 1″ to 2″ rainfall totals with slightly less amounts in the far eastern part of the state. Clouds and additional scattered showers kept temperatures down through the day with afternoon highs hovering into the mid to upper 50s with breezy conditions persisting. While the organized rain chances will wind down it is still looking a bit dreary to close out the week.
The storm system responsible for all the rain will be to our east on Friday but this is the time of the year where the low level moisture can be really tough to scour out even as drier air attempts to move in. This should be the case on Friday with plenty of clouds expected thanks to the low level moisture and even a bit of patchy drizzle not off the table early in the day. With the overcast conditions expected for the most part afternoon highs will remain in the mid-50s, which is right around average for this time of the year but it looks to be a dreary day overall.
High pressure will nose into the area just in time for the weekend so expect a return of sunshine starting Saturday. It should be a delightful November weekend to enjoy outdoor activities including a nice afternoon Saturday as Kentucky takes on Murray State at Kroger Field with kickoff set for 1:45pm. Afternoon highs should sneak into the low 60s in most spots Saturday with a slight bump in temperatures Sunday as the high pressure center begins to drift to the east. make some plans and enjoy this nice weather this weekend as we have some changes on the way in the extended forecast.
Our next storm system will be cranking up in the Central Plains early next week but we should stay dry on Monday before the rain chances return Tuesday and into the mid-week. The bigger story with this system will be the significant shift in our weather pattern that it will usher in toward the end of next week. Most of the data is now showing our first legitimate shot of cold air across the Ohio Valley this season as a big trough digs into the eastern part of the country. In addition to the cold air, an upper level system may spin over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley which would bring the possibility of a few snowflakes to the area as a result. The biggest question at this point is the timing for the arrival of the cold air as the data isn’t quite synced up yet so it’s something we’ll be watching closely next week.
