GREEN LAKE, Wis. (WFRV) — A video circulating on social media has thousands of users believing it shows the missing Green Lake County kayaker who allegedly faked his death and fled the country, but deputies are debunking that claim. According to a social media post from the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office, deputies say they do not believe the video, which has gained traction on the popular app TikTok, is of Ryan Borgwardt. Additionally, deputies say they are in contact with the interviewer in the video. Police investigating after 2-year-old hit, killed by vehicle in Wisconsin "Thank you to all for alerting us to [the TikTok video's] existence," the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office said. "We have verified this is not Ryan by contacting people who know Ryan." Borgwardt, 45, who was reported missing on Aug. 12, 2024, has not been deemed to have drowned in Big Green Lake. His name was run by law enforcement in Canada on Aug. 13, 2024. An analysis of a laptop given to authorities by Borgwardt's wife revealed he had planned his disappearance and tried to conceal his efforts to misguide investigators. He allegedly replaced his hard drive and cleared the browser on the date of his disappearance. Borgwardt reportedly moved funds into a foreign bank and changed his email address while communicating with a woman from Uzbekistan. In the TikTok video, a street interviewer talks with a man who looks similar to Borgwardt, and the man asks if he should move to Uzbekistan for a woman. Despite the similarities, authorities determined this was not Borgwardt.
